Mission
of the Month:
January |
This is an example of one of the many different types of missions the TRIDENTs complete on a weekly basis. One week we could be involved in a fairly quiet Patrol, while the next week we could ordered to infiltrate deep into enemy held waters to launch our deadly payload of Tomahawk missiles.
This mission clearly demonstrates the need to quickly locate, identify and destroy the enemy assets when your Submarine is in the "Trailblazer" role. If anyone of the those Chinese Submarines, managed to get past USS LA JOLLA, the CVN Battle Group would have had a hard time dealing with it.
This mission also demostrates the ADCAPs ability to locate and destroy targets when only a rough bearing is used...I.E When an ADCAP is fired in "SNAPSHOT" mode. So COs should be aware of the potential of the "SNAPSHOT" mode.

RESULTS (CV Direct Support)
RMKS/NARRATIVE/
1. At 1200 hrs I went to PD to check on radio traffic. Intel message revealed a possible Chinese HAN (with an acoustic signature similar to a Victor II) lurking in the area. We dove to 500 feet and headed for an intercept at flank speed (32 knots). During the high speed run we cut our speed and drifted every 5 to 10 minutes. Half way to the intercept point we slowed to 25 knots while maintaining the same tactics.
2. When coming out of a high speed run at 1243 sonar announced torpedo in the water. I immediately brought the ship around and headed north to escape the torpedo. I then fired a "Snap Shot" at the torpedo bearing. At 1257 we sunk a Chinese Kilo.
3. After successfully evading the torpedo, We made contact with a submarine. Earlier this contact sounded like a biological. Now it was definitately a Chinese Heroj. The target display indicates the target range to be 5307 yds. The TMA places the range at 21,446. Even though I was not sure of the range, the sonar signal was load and clear. I fired at the Heroj at 1306. The Heroj was sunk at 1310.
4. With no further contacts we ascended from 350 ft to 100 feet at 10 knots. When we passed through 200 feet we made contact with another hostile submarine. We stopped at 180 feet at 4 knots. I waited until I had 2 good dots on the TMA and at 1333 we fired a long shot (8 miles away) at the contact. TMA indicated that the target started to manoeuvre to avoid the torpedo at 1337. The Chinese Han was sunk at 1340 hrs.
5. The way has been cleared for The CVN Battle Group.
